Cummins to test hydrogen engine with Anadolu Isuzu
Global power leader Cummins (NYSE: CMI) has announced it will be delivering a hydrogen internal combustion engine to Anadolu Isuzu (AIOS) in 2025 for prototype testing in its popular Kendo intercity bus. Anadolu Isuzu will also review integrating this engine into other models in its portfolio, including in city buses.
The Cummins B6.7H will be tested by Anadolu Isuzu in the 13-metre Kendo, usually powered by a Cummins L9N natural gas engine and already providing a sustainable alternative to traditional fuels. Intended for intercity, school or shuttle applications, Kendo buses require a dependable and longer range power option. The hydrogen internal combustion engine technology demonstrator will deliver even lower tailpipe emissions, leveraging Cummins’ broader technology suite in support of Anadolu Isuzu’s sustainability objectives.
Rated at 216 kW (290 hp) and with 1200 Nm peak torque, Cummins intends for the B6.7H to provide diesel-like performance using zero-carbon hydrogen fuel. The technology is ideally suited to heavier-duty applications that require long distance operational range. Cummins’ initial tests have shown that the B6.7H delivers a more than 99% reduction in tailpipe carbon emissions and ultra-low NOx compared to the current Euro VI diesel engine standard.
Cummins and Anadolu Isuzu will collaborate on the integration of the B6.7H into a Kendo bus, with both organisations calling on existing expertise in developing natural gas-power – and powered - vehicles around the world. Anadolu Isuzu plans to conduct vehicle-level tests throughout 2026.
Cenk Yavuz, Director for Cummins Europe Bus Business, said: “This is an exciting moment in the development of hydrogen internal combustion engine technology. There is not a product like this currently available in the bus and coach market, and we have customer demand for natural gas-like performance with significantly reduced emissions. We can fulfil this with internal combustion engine technology, optimised to run on zero-carbon hydrogen fuel.
Anadolu Isuzu is a long-term partner for Cummins, so it’s fantastic to extend this further as we push the development of future technologies together.”
Cummins has been a supplier to Anadolu Isuzu for more than a decade, providing almost 5,000 engines to date across a range of sizes and applications. Engines are manufactured at Cummins’ Darlington Engine Plant in the UK and delivered to Anadolu Isuzu’s production facility in Kocaeli, Türkiye.
Cummins power now includes advanced internal combustion engine technologies, as well as zero-emissions solutions through its Accelera by Cummins brand. As part of its Destination Zero™ strategy, Cummins is committed to reducing greenhouse gases and tailpipe emissions in way that is practical, affordable and meets the operational needs of its customers.
Anadolu Isuzu supplies city buses, intercity, coach, school bus, midi-bus, commercial truck and shuttle applications across Europe, Türkiye, Middle East and Africa.
