Rachana’s path began in India, where she completed an integrated dual-degree program in software engineering. While her academic foundation was rooted in computer science, she found herself drawn to tools like Python and MATLAB, sparking an interest in data that would ultimately shape her career. Early in her professional journey, she gained exposure to working with data but had not yet fully envisioned it as her long-term path.

That direction became clearer as she made the life-changing decision to move to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in computer science with a focus on data science. The transition came with uncertainty. “It took me nearly two years to find the courage to uproot my life and career,” she says. “Even after moving, there were days filled with anxiety and endless ‘what ifs.’” She credits her parents, sister and brother-in-law for their unwavering support during this time, which gave her the strength and confidence to take that leap.

Her connection to Cummins began at a conference hosted by the Society of Women Engineers, where she was inspired by the company’s focus on engineering excellence, inclusion and real-world impact. What stood out most was the authenticity of the interactions she experienced. “I’m still in touch with the person who interviewed me,” she says, reflecting on how that early connection made the opportunity feel both genuine and personal. Even while applying to multiple opportunities, she found herself hoping to hear back from Cummins, realizing later that it had become her top choice.

That hope turned into reality in 2022, when she received an internship offer. “The moment I received my internship offer from Cummins was the first time I truly felt a sense of relief,” she recalls. When the opportunity evolved into a full-time role, it marked a defining milestone. “I finally told myself, I did it.”

Today, Rachana works in PLM, User and Stakeholder Experience, Metrics, where she transforms complex data into actionable insights that support business decision-making. Her role involves writing and optimizing SQL queries, building Power BI dashboards and validating data across multiple sources, while collaborating closely with stakeholders to translate business needs into analytical solutions. “At Cummins, no two days are exactly the same,” she says. “But the constant is using data to drive decisions, improve visibility and create impact.”

As her role has grown, so has her impact. In addition to her core responsibilities, she serves as a Process Subject Matter Expert for PLM Reporting & Analytics, gaining broader exposure to business processes and strengthening how data supports cross-functional teams. This experience has allowed her to expand both her technical expertise and her understanding of the business. In this capacity, she bridges the gap between technical analytics and business processes—ensuring that data solutions align with real operational needs. Beyond technical execution, Rachana focuses heavily on delivering value to customers and stakeholders through data.

Rachana credits Cummins’ collaborative culture as a key factor in her growth. She describes an environment where colleagues bring deep experience from across the organization and are always willing to share knowledge. She is especially grateful for the support and guidance of her managers, Gary J. and Elizabeth P., whose mentorship has played an important role in her development. “It’s motivating to work alongside people who nurture my learning and push me to grow, not just professionally, but personally,” she says.

That support extends beyond daily work. When Rachana traveled to India for her wedding, her team ensured continuity in her absence, allowing her to step away with confidence and fully embrace an important milestone in her personal life with her husband. “Knowing that I had such a dependable and supportive team allowed me to return with clarity, gratitude and renewed motivation,” she shares. She also notes the importance of the company’s flexible and understanding environment, as well as access to resources that support employee well-being during challenging times.

As she recently marked her three years with Cummins, Rachana remains focused on continued growth and long-term impact. “My professional goal is to keep developing as a data professional, take on high-impact work and eventually mentor others,” she says. Her experience has shaped not only her technical skills, but also her perspective on meaningful work, focusing on creating solutions that are reliable, practical and impactful.
