From Military Precision to Sustainable Innovation: Peter’s Journey at Cummins
By Cummins Inc., Global Power Technology Leader
For Peter, a Project Manager in Research & Technology Europe, the transition from military service to a career at Cummins has been both seamless and meaningful. With over three years at the company, Peter is now helping shape the future of sustainable technology—while staying true to the values that guided him through 25 years in the British Army.
“I love that I’m helping to shape future technology with a positive environmental impact,” Peter shares. “Being able to work flexibly to meet both business and personal needs is a huge bonus.”
Based at Centenary House in Darlington, Peter’s role is dynamic and multifaceted. His days are spent managing current R&T projects, exploring new funding opportunities, and supporting strategic business initiatives. “No two days are the same,” he says. “That’s what keeps it exciting.”
Peter describes the work environment at Cummins as one where people are deeply invested in the company’s mission. “Everyone I meet is driven and focused on delivering results that align with our values,” he says. Those values—integrity, excellence, teamwork, and diversity—resonate strongly with Peter, who served in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1.
“The military values and standards are something many people miss after leaving the Armed Forces,” he explains. “Finding a company like Cummins, where those values are mirrored, made the transition much easier.”
Peter is also actively involved in Cummins’ Veterans Employee Resource Group for Europe, where he supports talent acquisition and contributes to community initiatives through the Every Employee Every Community program.
His passion for sustainability was a key reason he joined Cummins. “I wanted a career where I could make a real impact in environmental and sustainability fields,” he says. “Cummins’ Destination Zero strategy aligned perfectly with my goals.”
Professional development is another area where Peter feels supported. “The performance management process ensures my goals are regularly reviewed, and my manager encourages me to gain experience across different business units,” he says. “Succession planning is taken seriously here.”
Peter’s military background continues to serve him well. “Soft skills like communication, cultural awareness, and the ability to speak confidently in front of an audience have all transferred into my role,” he says. “And just like in the military, advancement opportunities are there—you just have to take that step forward.”
When asked what advice he’d give to others considering a career at Cummins, Peter is clear: “Don’t limit yourself to your current role. Think about how your skills can add value in other areas. Be bold—reach out, have that informal chat, and learn more.”
Peter’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is stronger than ever. “Cummins has helped me strengthen and direct my goals by surrounding me with equally passionate people,” he says. “I’m proud to play my part in protecting the planet.”
